Leonard Cohen was already established as a denizen of 'bedsitter music' by the time this third album was issued. Deftly balanced between newly written material and older songs, it contains several of the singer's most graphic and literate compositions. Allegory vies with personal recollection to create a set of unparalleled depth while Cohen's grasp of melody stays as secure as ever. His unconventional voice remains fixedly morose, but its individuality ensures a bewitching resonance, particularly on 'Famous Blue Raincoat' and 'Joan Of Arc'. Cohen's poetic imagery was never as striking or as moving.
